Mike, I just wanted to thank you for all the links and information you put in this post. It's a whole lot to consider, and I may need to revisit it, but it's pretty hot stuff.

That's alright, that article. But:

"It also points out how all that money ($3.6 million) spent on Super Bowl ads was beaten by a guy in his basement in Kansas collaborating with another guy on the Ivory Coast for no money at all. This I think is key to what everyone involved in Web 2.0/New Media/Social Media is attempting to do."

I don't think that everyone is motivated in the way you describe, trying to outwit the Big Guys with a bright idea and a roll of sellotape.

This is a myth which the RICH love to promote. It is still common in the music business, which has always liked to say, you don't need a label, an expensive studio, a thousand pound Gibson guitar, and a top-name producer to make great music - you just need IMAGINATION and HARD WORK. Except that, if you do well-funded, properly promoted work, if you have the connections from a privileged background, you'll have all the chances to make a living from your music; and if you come from a council estate, play a beat-up guitar, and busk the underground, you'll almost certainly remain there for decades, no matter the extent of your fabulous genius.

Those that have, shall have more; those that have not, shall not get anywhere near = the vast majority of cases.

No, it is more complex than that, I'm pretty sure; and most of the people I know are well aware of the odds - so they must be in it for other reasons...

I agree with your insight that any online media sharing tool needs to have a community, at least to me it does. I share most of my photos on Flickr for exactly that reason, but when I started sharing movies I specifically chose for Vimeo because of their strong community and guidelines. The reason why I didn't choose for YouTube is the fact that so much content on Youtube is not "original" but ripped from somewhere else and uploaded. On Vimeo the guidelines specify that if you upload your video it should be yours, which makes judging someone on their video content way more interesting.
