I’m not sure that I’ve made it quite clear just how grateful, flattered and completely blown away the whole Slingers team have been by the fan response to our little slice of science fiction. I’d hoped we’d find an audience once the show was on the air, but had never imagined we’d have so much support so very early on. Every day brings email or Twitter comments that knock me for six.
A couple of days ago I got a DM from Haruka asking me if I’d seen the “cute stuff” going on over on LiveJournal. I had not. So I’m sat on the bus listening to ‘Astronaut’ by Amanda Palmer suddenly looking at a set of Slingers LJ icons created by deepfishy.
Of course I missed my stop.
After I left a thank you comment over on Things Deep and Shallow deepfishy replied:
icons are a cornerstone of livejournal fandom, and it’s such a pretty trailer. I’m only sad the current clips of JUNIOR didn’t translate very well to 100×100 pixels.
Also, I think this is the earliest in a fandom’s life I’ve seen an lj community spring up (
swinging_2263) – the only other one I can think of is Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which had the force of the Joss Whedon fanbase already.
Swinging 2263? How cool is that…
I’ll see what I can do about some better Junior images. Having been involved in social media for a while now I know how important fan access is and once we have everything green-lit I’ll be pushing for us to be as open as possible in every aspect of the show. Sleepydog and I have been talking about this for years now and luckily there are trailblazers like the Leverage and Eureka teams making some of our ideas going forward seem less insane.
Check out the Eureka Unscripted blog if you haven’t already. We’re so stealing that idea.
So again – THANK YOU for all the support. We’ll try and pay you back by blowing shit up in an interesting way.

It’s great being a part of something in its infancy. When everything is fresh and exciting and new and shiny. But not just because of that — because the sizzle was freakin’ awesome and ignited people’s imaginations and passions for some proper good sci-fi. Keep rocking it!
Give it a couple of years though, we’ll all hate you for “selling out” and “jumping the shark” by then
Well, is this a mutual admiration society or what? We love you right back for having us along for the ride. I have thoroughly enjoyed living out my producer wet dreams vicariously through you all!
And just so you know, over at a little website I like to call http://www.Tom-Mison.com, there is a forum you can click through to chat about Tom and Slingers, as well as a whole host of other (mostly) british actors/films/shows. The forum is hosted by my good friends at http://www.Darcylicious.com (they also have Twitter, FB and LiveJournal pages), and there are a good many artistic fans there who have done icons/avatars and signatures like the talented Deepfishy. If this is what happens before you’ve even shot a full show, I can’t even imagine the stuff we’ll see when you are on the air every week!
Looking forward to whatever you have in store for us next…
Liz.
You’ve captured people’s attention with that sizzle reel — I’ve shown it to friends and family, and people are excited. Not only is it unique, but it looks like more fun than is probably legal!
Thank YOU for sharing the reel and information about the process with us. I’m also a big fan of Leverage — I think it was a Leverage fan who pointed me to the Slingers reel in fact — and the way that the writers and producers bring us along for the ride really adds to the enjoyment.
Good luck with the project!
Hey man, you know what they say: you can’t please all people all of the time, but you can please all people some of the time. Right now you’re everything that’s good: the young underdog, cool, full of possibilities, undefined enough that everyone sees in you exactly what they want the most. It’s easy to like you.
Once you become a known quantity though, people will begin to notice discrepancies between what you are and what they wanted, and some may not be able to reconcile them, breeding discontent. You will never again have a fanbase as pure as the one you have now. Enjoy it.
(Make no mistake, I’m positive the show will be brilliant, but I try to be realistic about stuff like fan response. In some ways you were incredibly lucky, a luck you’ve certainly deserved, but in other ways you’re not even close to the hard part yet.)
