Cherry Heart

Maybe a month before we shot the sizzle for Slingers I was in the pub with Steve, Arran and Corran discussing among other things the kind of music we wanted for the short. This was going to be such a huge part of the puzzle that it was vital we got it right. When the Brownlee’s finished the first set of storyboards I (very roughly) cut them to Dean Martin’s ‘Ain’t That A Kick in the Head’. It worked well in that we were very much riffing on the 60′s Rat Pack, but it lacked the contemporary feel we needed and we didn’t really want a cover version.

It was Steve who suggested The Mummers.

I hadn’t heard of them at the time, but I downloaded the album from iTunes while we were chatting and listened to it for the first time on the way home. By the next meeting at Steve’s I was head over heels in love with the album. We gave it another listen and we were sold. Steve then reached out to the band to see if they’d be interested in recording something for us.

On the second day of shooting the sizzle the band popped down to see what we were up to. The timing was perfect as we had a casino full of people and DM and Frank doing their thing for the first time. I took a moment to chat with the band, talk about what we were aiming to do and what we hoped they could do for us.

And wouldn’t you know they knocked it out of the park for us on the first go. At the time the track was called ‘Mistaken Identity in the 23rd Century’ – I have a copy of the demo version and it’s bloody brilliant. It works beautifully on the finished sizzle and floors viewers whenever I show it to someone for the first time. Everyone asks about the music…

Slingers was always intended to be a 60s show that just happened to be set in space and the future. The science fiction was, of course, very important, but first and foremost we wanted to lift the rat pack vibe and concentrate on the characters. By the time we had the sizzle cast and crew I felt there was very little for me to do because they all understood the concept and worked their hearts out to bring it to life.

The Mummers’ track was the icing on the cake. Perfect. Or ‘cherry’ as Marti would have put it.

I was shocked when I heard of Mark’s death.

This evening I read a moving interview in The Guardian with Raissa and it was with a mixture of melancholy and happiness that I see that the song, now called ‘Cherry Heart’, has made it on to their new album.

I can’t wait to hear the final version and the rest of the tracks. I’ve been working ‘Tale to Tell’ very hard since grabbing it that evening with the guys. It’s a great album to write to and I’d like to think there’s something of it in the scripts I’ve written since.

Another Mike, a friend of mine, caught the Mummers live a while back and upped part of a live version of the song to YouTube:

Brilliant.

Do buy the album if you get the chance – it’s released on Monday. And thanks to Haruka (Marti) for pointing me in the direction of the Guardian article.

“The Mummers are an adventure, with all sorts of ups and downs and twists and turns. We’re a dysfunctional, disparate family, and normal things don’t happen to us,” she exclaims. Suddenly, her face brightens. “But that just makes us want to carry on and see what happens.”

What has been seen…

Stumbled across this while looking for something else:

That’s the first ever concept sketch of Junior (December 2008). I did have it as a Twitter background for a while until I started getting emails asking me about his metal penis.

Seriously.

March

2010 feels like it just got upgraded somehow. Feb’s dead, baby. Feb’s dead.

I just finished putting a new board together for one of several projects I’ve got up on the wall at the moment. Busy year this. I’ll break some of this down and let you know what’s filling my days over the next couple of posts.

Last week over at Sleepydog HQ we had the first development meeting on the project that’s taking shape in the wake of Slingers. No idea how much I can tell you about that at this stage, although we will be blogging from the development room from time to time so stuff is bound to leak a little. I guess it’s safe to say that it’s sci fi (sort of) and police procedural (kinda). But only in the same way that Slingers is a sci fi heist show – we tend to build on those basics pretty fast and as ever are being outrageously ambitious. Hope to introduce you to the show as soon as possible but for now I can’t even tell you where it’s set…

Another meeting on this tomorrow so I’ll tweet when I can. And Toby seems to be in Canada. No idea why…

Proto-fandom

I’m not sure that I’ve made it quite clear just how grateful, flattered and completely blown away the whole Slingers team have been by the fan response to our little slice of science fiction. I’d hoped we’d find an audience once the show was on the air, but had never imagined we’d have so much support so very early on. Every day brings email or Twitter comments that knock me for six.

A couple of days ago I got a DM from Haruka asking me if I’d seen the “cute stuff” going on over on LiveJournal. I had not. So I’m sat on the bus listening to ‘Astronaut’ by Amanda Palmer suddenly looking at a set of Slingers LJ icons created by deepfishy.

Of course I missed my stop.

After I left a thank you comment over on Things Deep and Shallow deepfishy replied:

icons are a cornerstone of livejournal fandom, and it’s such a pretty trailer. I’m only sad the current clips of JUNIOR didn’t translate very well to 100×100 pixels.

Also, I think this is the earliest in a fandom’s life I’ve seen an lj community spring up ([info]swinging_2263) – the only other one I can think of is Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which had the force of the Joss Whedon fanbase already.

Swinging 2263? How cool is that…

I’ll see what I can do about some better Junior images. Having been involved in social media for a while now I know how important fan access is and once we have everything green-lit I’ll be pushing for us to be as open as possible in every aspect of the show. Sleepydog and I have been talking about this for years now and luckily there are trailblazers like the Leverage and Eureka teams making some of our ideas going forward seem less insane.

Check out the Eureka Unscripted blog if you haven’t already. We’re so stealing that idea.

So again – THANK YOU for all the support. We’ll try and pay you back by blowing shit up in an interesting way.

Sean Pertwee talks Slingers

This has already done the rounds elsewhere, but just embedding it here for completion’s sake. A few minutes I spent with Sean on the set of the Slingers sizzle.

He was also very happy to do a little extra voice over work for us a few weeks later. Professional and delightful, working with Sean was one of the highlights of last year. Go watch Dog Soldiers again – as Sean said, “It’s still got legs…”

Wow, Bob, Wow!

We’re in the April issue of SFX magazine:

Unleash the Clicken to embiggen. And a big hello to all the SFX readers. We’ve had a lot of online love, but I think that may be out first print article outside of the industry trades. Correct me if I’m wrong.

And we have some fan art:

Cheers to Richard and SFX for taking an interest so early on and to Craig over at The Establishing Shot for the above.

Warms the cockles on such a winter’s day.

Check out the Sleepydog blog for a little GUN-love. It is Valentine’s Day after all…

Checking in…

No real meat to talk about this side of the new year, but rest assured that SLINGERS continues to move forwards.

I did remember a video I shot of Sean Pertwee on the set of the sizzle reel (in which he talks about why he thought it’d be a good idea to pitch in with us and a little bit about 2000AD). I’ve now left that in the more than capable hands of Sleepydog HQ. Speaking of which…

I’ve been very lucky to get to play front-of-house during all this interest in SLINGERS (64,000 views!), but every step of the way I’ve been supported by aone of a kind behind the scenes team. Mark Hilton, Neal Clark and Paul Long have put a lot of time and effort into getting our almost-a-TV-show this far and each of them utilises a skill-set I’m utterly lacking. Thanks guys!

So we’ll have that video up soonish and probably on the Sleepydog website.

I did a quick (probably sweary) interview with both Live for Films and Geek Syndicate. And other bits and pieces have continued to pop up all over the web. I’ve had a few more interview requests, but right now it’s just a question of finding the time. Please bear with me if I still owe you email…

SLINGERS aside, I’ve had an interesting few weeks. It’s one thing for people I admire to tell me they love what they’ve seen of the show, but it’s something else when they suggest we work together at some point. My email has been insane and I’ve had some lovely conversations with the great and good out in LA. The first few weeks in January are now scheduled and I’ll be helping get something I’m very excited about (and not allowed to talk about) off the ground before my next flight to LAX.

I think I’m right in saying that AVATAR is here. I was lucky enough to be invited to the world premiere last week and Todd kindly published my review up on Twitch. You can read it here. Because of a silly UK embargo and my intolerance to sleep we managed to get one of the first reviews up. Be interested to see how many people agree with me now it’s been released. I’m off to see it with a real audience on Boxing Day and in IMAX. Can. Hardly. Wait.

Few things in that movie I wanna talk about. Also had a post in draft form on mythology from before the sizzle excitement so will work on that – hopefully before the new CLASH OF THE TITANS gets here.

I’m slowly moving into Christmas mode here in SE1. Been a mad month and there’s been a lot to do and a lot to think about. Now I have a little more time again I’ll slip back into blogging mode I think.

Enough. Go watch the IRON MAN 2 trailer a few more times…

Less “CLICK” more “BOOM”

You can’t tell from that photo, but Junior’s smiling*.

Since Warren‘s triple-slap of blog post, tweet and Bad Signal, the sizzle reel up on Vimeo has had some 36,000 views. I haven’t checked with Steve yet to see how much attention his website has had over the last few days, but I think we’re safe in saying our snippet of the SLINGERS universe has had over 50,000 views at this point.

Not too shabby.

We were picked up by Slash Film, Twitch, Topless Robot, i09 and Sci Fi Wire to name five. I tried keeping track of all the blog embeds and comments, but it was slowly turning into a full time job. I’m still wading through email, messages and phone calls. And so far everything has been overwhelmingly supportive.

Ghasts have been flabbered.

I’ll post any news when I have it right here and hope to have some fun stuff up on the Sleepydog website by the end of the week too. In the meantime there’s always Twitter. God help you.

Tomorrow we start moving a little further up the court – I’m guessing we’ll be moving a little faster thanks to everyone reading this.

Bottom line – we’re determined to get this fucker made so it’s a bloody good job we have an audience.

Thank you!

*What? You thought he was CGI?

The Slingers sizzle

Ok.

So this has actually been floating on a few industry sites already so it was only a matter of time before it got linked to. Warren Ellis did that today and kindly christened it “Your favourite new TV show“. That, as you can imagine, sparked a little bit of new interest. Stuff like this and John Rogers exclaiming “JESUS. MURPHY” give me faith that we’re on the right track. Thanks guys!

So the version that got linked up was a tad small and only in .mp4 format over on Steve’s website. I’ve had a lot of requests for a more blog-friendly version so here you go:

Comments, email and Twitter chatter is coming in loud and clear. I’ll get back to you all asap, but feel free to embed and chat about the sizzle as you see fit.

This is actually the second sizzle reel for SLINGERS. There’s one that’s a tad longer with a slightly different voice-over from Sean, but this is the one we really like.

It’s directed by Steve Barron and stars Sean Pertwee, Adrian Bower, Tom Mison, Margo Stilley, Haruka Abe, GUN and JUNIOR. The outstanding conceptual design was by Arran and Corran Brownlee. The music is by The Mummers. And yeah I’m the creator/writer/idiot who came up with it. Sleepydog are the guys running the show.

To quickly answer the most obvious question, we’re hoping to shoot the pilot in 2010. We have a few more meetings to get through before that happens, but we’re still heading in the right direction. In fact we’ve had a lot of good news since the last update on here, but I don’t wanna jinx anything just yet.

More stuff when I have it, but as ever I’m overwhelmed for the love SLINGERS seems to generate. We’re doing our very best to make a proper sci fi show and those of you that came here via Warren already have very high expectations that we’ll make every effort to meet. Early support at this stage is not only crucial, it’s a nice reminder of why we we’re doing this.

You all fucking rock.

Objects in Space

Had lots of questions about the shot of Junior I revealed a few posts back, but I’m sorry. I can’t show you what happens next. Shush now.

Here’s my completely unrelated VloMo09 entry in which a couple of stunt men get thrown around a little bit:

The gun shot you hear is real. In that we had an armourer firing a real weapon on set. The actual gun you see was last used by Sean Connery.

The weird ass noise before the gunshot is just sound captured on the day, but the music is by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis taken from the movie Milano Trema La Polizia Vuole Giustizia (aka The Violent Professionals aka Rue De La Violence).

Power up

Seems I’ve been writing about everything but SLINGERS. Don’t worry – we’re still making a TV show. Couple more meetings happening in LA this week and as always I’m spending a few hours a day dropping the gang into some interesting scrapes via FinalDraft.

But seeing as I’m still waiting for the go ahead to share the finished sizzle reels with a few more people I figure a couple of stills won’t do too much damage.

Here’s Junior facing off against some security chaps:

Guess who wins.

Doubt that gives much away apart from the fact that we’re not filming this in SUPERMARIONATION.

Although I do have a few episodes of Thunderbirds on my iPhone at the moment…

Fresh Board

Fresh Board

I allowed a month slip by. Been a while since that happened. Guess I’ve been busy.

SLINGERS update:

We’re still all systems go. The sizzle is about to come back to use from Framestore and from the cuts I’ve seen they’ve done some brilliant work for us. Next stop is MIPCOM. Then we have a little post-sizzle work to do, but we’re already looking ahead. Quite a bit further ahead.

My main job last month (hence the lack of updates here) was to have another pass at the pilot script before starting work on the first batch of episodes. I just broke ground on the first of six episodes I’ll be writing over the next month or so.

Elsewhere I pitched something very British in tone and just started on pilot number two. Busy busy.

I’ll try and keep the blog a little more up to date from here on in.

Lots of crap to talk about…

Mistaken identity in the 23rd century

@sleepydog and I were chatting about the unique kind of marketing that @danlight gets up to with some very cool movies as a cue to how we handle SLINGERS as we move closer to shooting the pilot. We had lunch with Dan and he gave us some very good advice. I believe I still owe him some beers.

A few days later and I saw this brief video by The Mummers that I think Dan will get a kick out of:

I wish I could tell you more about it, but aside from a chat on the set of the sizzle I have no idea what the band are up to…

One heist at a time…

There’s some new info regarding SLINGERS up on the Sleepydog website. The thing to remember is that all this is pre-pilot. Details will change and all the material we’ve blogged so far should not be considered truly representative of what the final sizzle reel will look like. The sizzle will in turn inform what needs tweaking for the pilot. But all this stuff so far is purely promotional or rough cut quality. We’re taking a few risks putting so much material out so early, but I push for this kind of thing working on other people’s projects so it would be a tad hypocritical not to give it a go on my own show.

The title above for example is simply a placeholder at the end of the rough cut. That said, I like the feel of it already. I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who are used to knocking the ball the fuck out of the park on the first swing.

So for those that didn’t know and want a little more background:

Slingers is set in the year 2960 A.D., following mankind’s first interplanetary war. Humanity is now clustered into a finite, but still vast section of the universe known as Enclosed Space. Humanity won the war with an aggressive alien enemy, but at a cost. The way back to Earth is now cut off by an impassable barrier – a side effect of the blast that finally pushed the enemy back.

The show takes its name from a group of people thrown together on board an experimental spacecraft that is capable of Slinging itself to any point in space. In theory it’s the only craft capable of getting home. In reality the crew are using it to carry out a series of high tech heists and get even with those who are now exploiting their positions in the post war hierarchy.

Dominic ‘DM’ Monroe, a special ops war veteran becomes the de facto leader of this small team of thieves who rail against the decision by military command to just ‘stay where they are and make the best of it’. They’re determined to get home and if that means breaking a few rules and picking up a lot of enemies along the way then so be it.

A few more pics. The last for now. But I’ll probably have a little video at some point….

Respect the badge…

I was in conversation the other day following completion of the Slingers sizzle shoot about why it was we care about the small details of geekery as much as we do. It seemed best summed up with this line:

“Some people visit, but we live in this world. You have Judge Dredd tattooed onto your arm for fuck’s sake…”

Which is a nice way of looking at it. I can’t oversell how big an influence 2000AD has been on me.

Talking to Sean Pertwee over lunch about our mutual love of the British sci fi comic back in the day was something to cherish. That he read the script and immediately recognised the character of GUN as a homage to Rogue Trooper is as key to me as his ‘getting’ the character of Colonel Hall. This stuff is important to me.

Subsequently I opened my iPhone in a bar the other night to find I’d been sent an exclusive peek at some new Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper art work by current 2000AD artist Paul J Holden (thanks Paul!). This week I’ll be talking to Paul about having a bash at some Slingers artwork. It seems apt as back when the thing was called ‘Ratpackers’ it was very much a 2000AD inspired comic book project. And then on Saturday morning I heard this package crash into the hallway:

I’ve been aware of Termight Replicas for a couple of years at least (if memory serves I managed to talk about them on Londonist back in the day) so it was great to see @Termight in my twitter stream. Wakefield got in touch with me a little while ago and the conversation lead to Saturday’s package. The contents?

That’s a Judge Dredd replica belt buckle based I believe on the artwork of Cliff Robinson. Along side it was this:

Now I’ve had a Judge Dredd badge before. They gave one away with Prog 300 back in 1983 and I kept it in fairly good condition up until about five years ago. Not bad for a free gift made out of plastic and gold paint. But this… well this is a serious piece of comics merchandise.

Full disclaimer. I’m not a big collector of this stuff – half the time I’m just simply baffled by the array of comics related collectibles and the price tags attached to them. And nine times out of ten I’m amazed at how poor the attention to detail is. I’m happy for other people to be happy collecting that stuff, but I’m happier knowing that particular bug passed me by.

These two items though are in a different league. First thing you notice is the weight. These guys are not messing around. They even manage to kick the ass of non comic fans. The detail is brilliant and they’ve immediately both become prize possessions.

But if you have even a passing interest in 2000AD you are going to want something from Wakefield. Turns out he doesn’t do this for a living – he’s just a fan like you and me. I guess the easiest way to say it is that he lives in our world.

Go throw money at him – what you get in return is something you can’t buy anywhere else.

The Sizzle

script

The Slingers sizzle reel is now in the hands of the digital effects guys following a tremendous shoot last week.

We had a marvelous crew who gave their all to get this just right. Steve went for every single shot and it was quite an experience seeing him in action on set. We’re very lucky to have him on board. Next week I’ll begin working on the pilot script with him to really kick it into shape.

A lot of people were tuning into what was happening via Twitter and I tried to give a feel of the shoot along with the occasional Twitpic where appropriate. We amassed a considerable amount of behind the scenes material that we’re still going through and should eventually compliment the sizzle. In the meantime I’ll tease the odd bit here and of course I have a bunch of stuff on my iPhone that I’m easily bribed into opening up if you bump into me near a bar…

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the entire cast and crew for going the extra mile last week. We’re now working on the pilot to get it ready to shoot before the end of the year and we’re going to try our very best to use as many of the same people as possible as we take Slingers forward.

I’ll be blogging a lot more about all of this but for now I guess most people just wanna see what exactly we were up to…

Marti and Junior, our Mech Five

More of this to come. Just a taste to show that we mean business both with casting and design – we did use green screen where necessary, but our robot is an actual build. The plan is to have the sizzle completed in October after which we’ll arrange a couple of screenings in London, New York and L.A.

Oh, and remind me to blog about how much Sean Pertwee loves 2000AD and why he was drawn to Slingers

Here we go…

Friday we start filming the Slingers sizzle. It’s mostly a day of green screen (a little violence) and the chance to work with one of my favourite actors. Sunday is pretty much the full cast and we have a lot to squeeze in. Some gun fights, a space walk, a robot kicking ass and a love story…

I’m hoping to to be able to interview some of the cast and crew from Friday onwards as I would with any social media gig or set visit. I’m hoping having that extra job to do will take my mind off the fact that this is all my fault.

It’s a weird feeling knowing that an actress I’ve been watching for the last six years on another show is now learning the lines I wrote while sitting at the ICA or BFI drinking beer and listening to Black Flag.

I’ve been lucky enough to stay involved in the writing process right from the initial pitch in LA last year to the last redraft sent to Steve this morning. The universe we’ve created (because now more than ever this is a team effort) hasn’t changed a lot from the broad idea I got down on paper last November. But it has been improved upon and honed an awful lot. I’m very happy with it.

What’s been fun – and something I wasn’t at all prepared for – is for actors to get the characters as much I do. I knew Arran and Corran would love messing around in the Slingers universe because I’ve known them for years and we share a lot of the same interests and influences. Working with Sleepydog on Slingers (and much more) has felt natural since day one so its no surprise that we’re all on the same page at this stage. But a few days ago I heard that one of cast was eager to get this week’s shooting out of the way so she could start work on the pilot and then the series proper (we have the show plotted out as far as the third season) – she believes in the character. And that’s the biggest compliment I’ve had so far.

So this is the plan: we shoot the sizzle (an industry-only, not for broadcast, teaser) this week. The one for Slingers is designed as a mini episode to give a taste of what’s to come. Post production on it should be completed by September and then before the end of the year we’ll start filming the pilot.

The pilot as written right now is a two-episode ‘tv movie’. It should run around 90 minutes and we’re hoping that it will hit your TV screens sometime in 2010.

Between now and then we’ll also be doing a sizzle for De-Tech and working on the third show.

That’s the plan.

Let’s see what happens next…

Sleepydog wakes up

The new Sleepydog website and blog launched today. I’ve been working with Sleepydog for maybe a year now. First with the social media stuff and more recently with the TV stuff. I consider myself lucky to be part of a team who has had so much success in creating so much cool content. Best of all, whether its working on Amplified, joining in at CreativeCoffeeClub or figuring out the perfect crime for our new show there’s never been a day I haven’t enjoyed.

I only work on a couple of the projects that come out of the office – in lots of ways it reminds me of the Googleplex setup, just without the creepy Stepford Wives atmosphere – but there’s always a lot more going on than I know about. Well worth adding the new site to your RSS reader to keep up – these guys tend to move fast.

Oh and I’ll be blogging over there too.

Also a good place to see some Slingers concept art:
